Help Set up the room

What each room needs, and who to ask

Each room needs a laptop that stays there all day, a way for it to hear the room's microphone, and an internet connection. This page says what to ask for and who to ask, in words you can forward to the AV company and the venue's IT team.

A laptop that stays in the room

Each room needs a laptop that stays there for the whole day, with Frasiey open on it. Not the speaker's: speakers bring their own laptops and take them away again between sessions, and the captions go with them. Ask the venue or your AV company for one laptop per room that nobody will unplug, beside the room's sound if you can.

The download page lists what the laptop needs. Most laptops from the last five years are fine.

A way to hear the room's microphone

The laptop's own microphone hears almost nothing from the front of a hall. Frasiey needs the room's own sound: a ceiling array, a microphone on the table, or the feed from the lectern or the mixer. A feed reaches the laptop through a cable into its audio input, or through a small USB audio interface, and the AV company usually has both.

The sentence to send them is: Can you give me the room's audio into this laptop? They will know what it means.

Mac or Windows

A Mac on macOS 26 or later captions nine spoken languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Other Macs and Windows caption English. Attendees can read in any of 100 languages either way, because the translation is made from the captions. If your speakers will talk in anything other than English, ask for a Mac on macOS 26 or later in those rooms. Rental laptops are often Windows, so ask early.

The network, for the venue's IT team

Forward this part as it is. Every connection starts from the laptop or the phone, and nothing needs to reach the laptop from outside.

What Frasiey needs from the venue's network The laptop in each room needs outbound HTTPS and WebSocket to api.frasiey.com, app.frasiey.com and updates.frasiey.com. Attendees' phones on the venue Wi-Fi need live.frasiey.com. The first time a Mac downloads a spoken language, it also reaches Apple's servers. The first time each laptop gets ready, it downloads about 300 MB. A guest network with a sign-in page will stop the laptop, so give it a network without one.

Attendees read on their own phones, over their phone signal or the venue's Wi-Fi, from live.frasiey.com. Captions are text, so they need very little of either.

Who to ask

  • The laptop. The venue, or your AV company if you have one.
  • The microphone feed. The AV company, or whoever runs the room's sound.
  • The network. The venue's IT team, with the part above.
  • Putting Frasiey on the laptop. Whoever has the laptops. Send them the setup link: Someone else has the laptop.
With only a phone All of it, because this page is about asking. Forward it from your phone to the AV company and to the venue's IT team, and read their answers there too.

What to do next

Once the venue has said yes, Put Frasiey on the room's laptop.
